October 10, we unite with millions around the globe to celebrate World Mental Health Day 2024, under the theme “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right”. At Health Equity Leadership Partnership Global (HELP Global), we know that mental health goes far beyond what happens in therapy rooms—it's deeply connected to the environments where people live, work, and build their futures. For too long, communities around the world, particularly in rural areas and among women, have been left behind in the global mental health conversation.
"After living in Africa and now in the U.S., I've learned one universal truth: whether it's in a village or a city, people need someone to talk to—and sometimes a good cup of tea helps too!" Dee is healthcare manager turned clinical mental health counselor, and founding member of HELP Global.

Did you know that in rural Africa, 85% of people lack access to any form of mental health care, and that women in these regions are three times more likely than men to suffer from depression? These are not just numbers; they represent real people—mothers, daughters, sisters—whose mental health needs are often overlooked. It is clear that mental health is influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors, and addressing these challenges requires a new approach.
At HELP Global, we take a holistic view. We believe that everyone—no matter their discipline or specialty—has a role to play in improving mental health outcomes. From advocating for mental health policies in the U.S. to training community health workers in Africa, we work to build integrated solutions that recognize mental health as a part of overall well-being. Whether you are a healthcare provider, community leader, educator, or advocate, there is something you can do to help create healthier minds for all.
So, what can you do? The answer is simple: partner with us or some other group! At HELP Global, we are always seeking like-minded individuals and organizations ready to make an impact. Whether you are in public health, education, policy, or another field entirely, your expertise matters. Together, we can close the mental health care gap and make mental health a reality for everyone, everywhere.
Reach out to us today at healthequitypartnership.org. Let us build a future where mental health is recognized as a human right—because we all deserve to thrive.
